Implementation of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) -LAMATA
10 years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to work on a groundbreaking World Bank-assisted project aimed at enhancing urban transport in Lagos. As part of the team at OAK Telecom and Technology Consulting Ltd. ("OT&T Consulting"), I was involved in the implementation of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and Bus Arrival Time Display system for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
We embarked on this journey with a brainstorming session that was both intense and inspiring, bringing together brilliant minds like Lanre Kuye, Obisesan Babajide, Ayo Olotu, Sanusi Musa, Yomi Balogun, Femi Oshin, Eniola Ojomu, Dami Awe, Tope Odunsi, Damilola Ajayi, and Damilare Adekola. Our mission was clear: to revolutionize how public transportation information is disseminated, making it more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for the millions of Lagosians who rely on public transport daily.
Our discussions revolved around innovative technology solutions that would not only provide real-time bus schedules but also improve the overall transport experience through data-driven insights. The Intelligent Bus Display was envisioned to be a beacon of modernity in Lagos' bustling streets, designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure while pushing the boundaries of what public transport technology could achieve in Africa.
This project was not just about installing screens; it was about building a network that could adapt, grow, and serve the community better over time. We tackled challenges from data management to user interface design, ensuring that the system was intuitive for all users, regardless of their tech-savviness.
Reflecting on this project, I'm proud of what we achieved together. It wasn't just about technology; it was about improving lives, reducing wait times, and making daily commutes less of a hassle for everyone. The collaboration with LAMATA and the support from the World Bank highlighted how powerful partnerships can drive significant change.
A decade later, the impact of our work is still visible in Lagos especially with the effective monitoring of the First and Last Mile (FLM) buses, serving as a testament to what can be achieved when vision, expertise, and dedication converge. Here’s to more such transformative projects that continue to shape our cities for the better.
